Liver Unit 30 Year Celebration- Looking Back, Moving Forward; 3 Decades of the Liver Unit
Virtual Meeting 13-14th May 2021 HomeWelcome
It was our greatest pleasure to welcome you to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of the establishment of the Liver Unit, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The unit was established in 1989 when Professor Deirdre Kelly, CBE was appointed to the post of Consultant Paediatric Hepatologist at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Five Ways, Birmingham.
This was a special occasion for the Multidisciplinary team at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital and colleagues from the adult centre, University Hospital of Birmingham, Edgbaston.
The meeting highlighted the multidisciplinary team involvement in the care of children with liver disease who may also have gut involvement and will build on the success of preceding meetings.
The aim is for adult and paediatric colleagues joining with our colleagues from district general hospitals, local, nationally and globally who all work in collaboration to look after these complex patients to interact with each other on common problems and seek innovative solutions that are implemented in practice
The scientific programme has been put together by the hard work of many people. We would like to acknowledge the leading scientific experts in the field who have agreed to spend their valuable time and have taken time out of their busy working schedule and family lives to celebrate our special occasion.
The programme consists of a mixture of expert views, workshops highlighting changes in management from specialist centre to local hospital thereby reducing burden on patients’ time in travelling long distances and meeting their needs locally.
There will also be a separate workshop session for the allied health professionals to encourage networking and discussion around the complex issues of family support and interdisciplinary management.
